Morgan is a 34-year-old woman who gave up her dreams of going to college and becoming a teacher when she got pregnant with Clara at 17. Clara is a 16-year-old girl who wants to pursue her passion for acting and be with the boy she loves, Miller, who happens to be the son of her father’s best friend.
The novel begins with a flashback to the summer when Morgan met Chris, her husband and Clara’s father, and how she felt a connection with Jonah, Chris’s friend and Miller’s father. The novel then fast-forwards to the present, where Morgan and Clara are preparing for a family dinner to celebrate Morgan’s birthday and Jenny’s pregnancy. Jenny is Morgan’s sister and Jonah’s fiancée, who rekindled their romance after Jonah disappeared for 17 years. During the dinner, Chris and Jonah get into a heated argument and leave the house. Later that night, Morgan receives a phone call that changes her life forever: Chris and Jonah have died in a car accident.
The novel follows Morgan and Clara as they deal with their grief and the secrets that are revealed after the accident. Morgan finds out that Chris was having an affair with Jenny, and that Jenny’s baby might be his. Clara finds out that Miller knew about the affair and didn’t tell her. Morgan and Clara drift apart, as they blame each other and themselves for what happened. Morgan finds solace in John, a neighbor who lost his wife to cancer. Clara finds comfort in Miller, who tries to prove his love and loyalty to her. Morgan and Clara also discover new things about themselves, such as Morgan’s desire to go back to school and Clara’s talent for singing.
