Fallon and Ben meet the day before Fallon's cross-country move from Los Angeles to New York to pursue a theater career. Their immediate connection leads them to spend Fallon's last day in LA together. Ben, an aspiring novelist, finds inspiration in Fallon's life for his book. Despite the untimely nature of their attraction, they agree to meet every November 9th at the same location to catch up on their lives. Over the years, their annual meetings are full of surprises, growth, and unexpected tragedies, including a secret Ben has kept about the fire that scarred Fallon, which involves his family and a devastating event on one of those November 9ths. Fallon moves back to LA, hoping to fully reconcile with Ben after realizing the extent of the pain he also endured.
