This dystopian science fiction story is narrated by Klara, a solar-powered Artificial Friend (AF) with exceptional observational skills. Klara watches the behavior of people from her place in a store before she is chosen as a companion for a sickly teenage girl named Josie. Set in the U.S. in an unspecified future, the novel explores profound questions about love and what it means to be human in a rapidly changing modern world. It was longlisted for the 2021 Booker Prize.
