A Deadly Education
Naomi Novik
First published 29 september 2020 From The Scholomance Series #Book 1A Deadly Education is the first book in the Scholomance series by Naomi Novik, a dark and exciting fantasy novel about a magic school full of dangers and secrets. The main character is Galadriel “El” Higgins, a loner who has a powerful affinity for destructive magic. She tries to survive in the Scholomance, a school where there are no teachers, no friends, and no escape from the monsters that lurk everywhere. Her only hope is to graduate, but that means facing a deadly challenge with no allies. Her life changes when she meets Orion Lake, a popular and heroic student who keeps saving her from the monsters, much to her annoyance.
I liked this book because it was original, thrilling, and witty. The characters were complex and interesting, especially El, who has a sarcastic and cynical voice. The plot was fast-paced and unpredictable, with many twists and turns that kept me hooked. The world-building was impressive and detailed, with a lot of history and culture about the magic system and the different factions. The writing style was smooth and engaging, with a lot of humor and action.
I think this book is a great start to the Scholomance series, because it introduces an intriguing premise and a compelling relationship between El and Orion. I am curious to see how their story will continue in the next books, and what other secrets they will uncover. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy, horror, or mystery.
